The band Blind Melon, most famous for their 1993 hit "No Rain," was fronted by lead vocalist Shannon Hoon, who died of a drug overdose in 1995. Blind Melon formed in 1989, and the band's attempts to get established were helped along by Hoon's association with Guns N'Roses frontman Axl Rose, a high school friend of Hoon's sister Anna. Hoon lent his background vocals for several Guns N'Roses tracks, including "The Garden" (1992) and "Don't Cry" (1992), and he appeared in the music video for "Don't Cry." Less than a year later, Blind Melon's own breakout video was in heavy rotation on MTV.
