The Rockefellers are a legendary American family of tycoons. John D. Rockefeller started the Standard Oil Company and became the first American billionaire. His brother, William Rockefeller, was a partner in Standard Oil. John is also credited with founding Rockefeller University and the University of Chicago. John was a strong advocate of philanthropy. His foundations helped pioneer the field of medical research, most notably in the diseases of hookworm and yellow fever. His son, John D. Rockefeller, Jr. (known as "Junior") was in charge of the majority of his father's foundations. In 1911, Standard Oil was convicted of monopolistic practices and disbanded. The elder John's grandson, David Rockefeller, served as a succesful New York banker for over 20 years. Another one of his grandsons, Nelson A. Rockefeller, is a former New York governor as well as the 41st U.S. Vice President. Yet another grandson, Winthrop Rockefeller, was an Arkansas governor. Two of John's great-grandsons also have political ties. Winthrop Paul Rockefeller was a Lieutenant Governor of Arkansas for 10 years, and John D. Rockefeller IV (known as "Jay") is a former West Virginia governor and current West Virginia Senator.
