Maria Shriver, First Lady of California. Her mom was a Kennedy and her dad was the 1972 Democratic vice-presidential candidate.

Known as America's "Royal Family," the Kennedys have a long history in politics. Politician Joseph P. Kennedy and Rose Fitzgerald (daughter of John "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald, a prominent politician) were the parents of nine children, including 35th U.S. President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and Senator Ted Kennedy.

Joseph was appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as the inaugural Chairman of the U.S. SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) and briefly served as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom at the beginning of World War II. Both JFK and Robert were assassinated in separate cases.

Ted Kennedy's son Patrick Kennedy was elected to Congress from Rhode Island in 1995, where he served until deciding not to seek re-election in 2010.

JFK and wife Jackie's daughter Caroline Kennedy was rebuffed when she sought Hillary Clinton's Senate seat in 2009, the same year Ted Kennedy passed away.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Jr. died at the age of 33 after a plane he was piloting crashed.

JFK's sister, Eunice Kennedy, married Robert Sargent Shriver, a politician who helped create the Peace Corps and served as the Democratic Party's 1972 Vice-Presidential candidate. His daughter is Maria Shriver, an award-winning TV journalist and wife of actor and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Maria's three brothers are also in showbiz. In Massachusetts politics, the Kennedys battled across several generations with another nepotistic family, the Cabot Lodges.

On March 10, 2010, Patrick Kennedy gained national attention for his shouting tirade on the floor of Congress aimed at the news media's failure to better cover the Afghanistan conflict. In November 2011, Patrick's memoirs were published, titled Coming Clean.  The title refers to Kennedy's battles with alcohol and drug addictions, as well as depression.  In 2011, he launched a 10-year initiative, One Mind for Research, to fight neurological disorders and their causes.

In April 2012, Patrick and his wife, Amy Petitgout, welcomed a new Kennedy to the family, baby boy Owen Patrick Kennedy
