An actress since 1991, British actress Kate Winslet was honored with her first Academy Award nomination ("Best Supporting Actress") in 1996, for her role in 1995's Sense and Sensibility. Kate first garnered worldwide fame playing Leonardo DiCaprio's love interest the 1997 blockbuster Titanic, which also marked her second Oscar nomination (for "Best Actress"). Since then, she has made a number of critically-acclaimed movies, such as Finding Neverland (2004), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), and Little Children (2006). Born to stage actors Roger Winslet and Sally Bridges-Winslet, Kate is also the sister of character actresses Anna Winslet and Beth Winslet. Her uncle, actor Robert Bridges, was an integral part of London's West End theatre district, and appeared in the original West End production of Oliver!. Her maternal grandparents, Linda Bridges and Archibald Oliver Bridges, founded the Reading Repertory Theatre.

Kate finally broke her "always the bridesmaid" streak with a win for "Best Actress" at the 2009 Academy Awards for her role in 2008's The Reader. The Oscar marked her sixth nomination and first win. A second 2008 film, Revolutionary Road, in which she once again starred with Leonardo DiCaprio, was nominated for three Oscars, but did not take home any Academy Awards. The film was directed by Kate's husband, Sam Mendes (American Beauty). However, Kate won both the "Best Actress" (Revolutionary Road) and "'Best Supporting Actress" (The Reader) 2009 Golden Globe awards. At the 2009 Screen Actors Guild Awards, Kate was nominated for "Best Actress" for Revolutionary Road, and won "Best Supporting Actress" for The Reader. At the British BAFTA Awards, Kate won "Best Actress"  for her role in The Reader, thereby beating her other nominated performance in the same category for Revolutionary Road.
