Actress Tatum O'Neal (The Bad News Bears), who won an Oscar at the age of 11 co-starring with her father in Paper Moon, is the daughter of actor Ryan O'Neal (1970's Love Story) and actress Joanna Moore, who starred in 1963's Son of Flubber and may be best remembered as "Nurse Peggy" on The Andy Griffith Show. Tatum was once married to tennis great John McEnroe. Ryan and Joanna's other son is character actor Griffin O'Neal, who starred with his father and Tatum in the 1976 film Nickelodeon. Ryan's son (and Tatum's half-brother) Patrick O'Neal is an actor who had brief appearances in Die Hard 2 (1980) and Wild Hogs (2007), as well as shows like China Beach (1989) and Beverly Hills, 90120 (1990). Patrick's mother is actress Leigh Taylor-Young. Leigh and Ryan appeared together on the 1960s TV show Peyton Place, as well as in the films The Big Bounce (1969), TV movie Under the Yum Yum Tree (1969), and The Games (1970). Ryan is the brother of actor Kevin O'Neal, best known for his role as "Ben Whitledge" on the 1960s series No Time for Sergeants. Ryan is the son of character actress Patricia O'Neal (who had bit parts in her son's 1970s movies What's Up Doc? and Nickelodeon) and author/screenwriter Charles O'Neal (1959's The Alligator People, 1963's Lassie's Great Adventure, episodes of 1960s TV series The Untouchables, Lassie, and Daniel Boone). Ryan's son with former Charlie's Angels star Farrah Fawcett, Redmond O'Neal, voiced a character in the 1998 TV movie The Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars. Farrah voiced the character of "Faucet," mother to then 13-year-old Redmond's character, "Squirt."
Ryan and his sons have had a few brushes with the law. In 2007, Ryan was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon and negligent discharge of a firearm after an altercation with Griffin, who had allegedly tied Redmond (reportedly intoxicated at the time) to a staircase to keep him from leaving the house. Ryan then came home and allegedly fired a "warning shot" to scare Griffin. In 2008, both Ryan and Redmond were arrested under suspicion of narcotics possession. Ryan was later sentenced to 18 months of rehabilitation after pleading guilty to the charges stemming from the arrest. In April 2009, Redmond was arrested on drug charges. Police allegedly found heroin and Xanax in his possession at the time of his arrest. Redmond then pleaded to be released from jail to be sent to a rehabilitation facility. Redmond completed his rehab in August 2010 and was released, but remains on probation for two years.
