Singer Whitney Houston got her start singing gospel songs in church with her mother, gospel/soul singer Cissy Houston (born Emily Drinkard), cousin Dionne Warwick ("Walk On By," "Do You Know the Way to San Jose," "That's What Friends Are For"), and another cousin, late soul singer Dee Dee Warwick (whose biggest hit was 1966's "I Want To Be With You," but who also sang the original version of "You're No Good" in 1963, and who had a Top 20 R&B hit with "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" three years before The Temptations and Diana Ross & The Supremes took it to #2 on the charts). Whitney later performed with Cissy, Dionne, and Dee Dee in their group The Gospelaires. The Gospelaires also sometimes performed with The Drinkard Singers, which was managed by Lee Drinkard Warwick, Dee Dee and Dionne's mother. Dee Dee and Dionne's father was Mancel Warwick, who worked as a gospel records promoter for Chess Records. Acclaimed soprano singer Leontyne Price was a Drinkard cousin.

In later years, Whitney's troubled marriage to New Edition singer Bobby Brown garnered more headlines than either singer's career. Whitney starred with Bobby in the 2005 Bravo reality show Being Bobby Brown, which lasted only one season and garnered negative reviews. Apparently, Bobby pitched the show to the network, and was only given the green light with the condition that his famous wife would agree to appear. Whitney and Bobby's daughter is Bobbi Kristina Brown, an aspiring actress and singer who sang with her mother publicly several times.  In May 2012, it was announced that Bobbi Kristina would star in a reality show called The Houston Family Chronicles with Cissy and Dionne. The show follows the family as they continue to mourn the loss of Whitney and try to move on with their lives, all while maintaining the megastar's estate.
