Josh's dad, Zero Mostel, as "Max Bialystock" in the original version of "The Producers" (1968), a role played more recently by Nathan Lane.
Actor Josh Mostel is the son of Tony Award-winning star of stage and screen Zero Mostel. Josh has more than 50 screen credits to his name, and he is known for his roles in Jesus Christ Superstar (1973), City Slickers (1991) and Adam Sandler flicks Billy Madison (1995) and Big Daddy (1999). In 1948, when Josh was two years old, his father had one of the earliest comedy shows on television, Off the Record. Zero was then blacklisted during the Red Scare of the 1950s. (In 1976, he played a blacklisted character in Woody Allen's The Front). His career rebounded in the 1960s when he starred on Broadway in Fiddler on the Roof and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, then reprised the latter role on screen in 1966. Two years later he starred in the original movie version of The Producers, creating the role played by Nathan Lane in the 2005 revival. Josh's mother, Kate Mostel, was a Broadway actress and former dancer with the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes. She was also an author, co-writing the book 170 Years of Show Business, which was published in 1978.
