Nora, Delia, Amy, and Hallie are the children of screenwriting team Phoebe Ephron and Henry Ephron. They used baby Nora as the muse for their play Three's a Family, and the letters she wrote them from college as inspiration for 1963's Take Her, She's Mine. Henry and Nora's most memorable joint projects include There's No Business Like Show Business (1954), Carousel (1956), and Desk Set (1957).

Nora and her first husband, Dan Greenburg, co-wrote an episode of Adam's Rib in 1973. Her second marriage was to "Watergate" journalist Carl Bernstein. Together they had two children, Max Bernstein and Jacob Bernstein. Max is an aspiring actor whose first onscreen credit was as "Tree Boy #1" in his mother and aunt's film This is My Life. Jacob worked as a production assistant for 1997's In & Out, and as a staff assistant on his mother and aunt's filmYou've Got Mail.
